Sport Pilot, what's that?

Sport Pilot is the newest Airmen certification available from the Federal Aviation Administration.  A Sport Pilot certificate will allow you to fly and carry a passenger in a registered, or N numbered, Light Sport Aircraft with the proper endorsement(s) and by using your valid drivers license in lieu of a current medical.  The Sport Pilot Rule was signed in June of 2004 by the FAA Administrator, Ms. Marion Blakely, after many years of development.

Below you can review the rankings of US Airmen Certifications.

Pilot Ratings

The sport pilot concept is simple.

It allows us to train pilots for a simple mission in a simple aircraft .

Sport Pilots are only eligible to fly aircraft that are either certified specifically as light-sport aircraft (LSA) or were certified prior to the LSA regulations and are within the maximum weight and performance limitations of light-sport aircraft .

In the U.S. , a Sport Pilot certificate allows the pilot to operate a light-sport aircraft (a small, low-powered aircraft), under a limited set of flight conditions. The U.S. Sport Pilot certificate is similar to other countries' ultralight certificates. It is the only U.S. pilot certificate for powered aircraft that does not require a medical examination; a driver's license can be used as proof of medical competence.
